Updated Tuesday August 26, 7:25pm EST

Larry may be moved to Oakmont nursing home so he can receive more aggressive physical therapy. He has shown small signs of improvement. There seems to be some small responses to commands that are taking place.

The major prayer concerns are for Allyson to have peace with where Larry is being moved. That Larry's trache tube will be removed. And that he would continue to respond to stimulus.

Updated Tuesday July 29, 6:45pm EST

As a result of Larry's move to Greenville and because there are no major changes in his condition we will be updating this section on a weekly not daily basis, unless of course there is a major shift in in his condition.

At this time the best thing is to pray that Larry would begin to have a voluntary response to interaction.

Updated Monday July 21, 4:45pm EST

Larry is now back in Greenville. He is in room 301 at North Greenville Hospital. He can be there between 30 and 60 days. Lane says Larry is in some pain. That is a good sign, because it means his body is responding to some pain.

Updated Friday July 18, 3:15pm EST

We have some very good news! Larry has been accepted at the Greenville Hospital Systems Long Term Acute Care Center. That facility is located in Travelers Rest. He will be moved Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. We do not know what the visiting times are yet. As soon as we know the times we will post them on this website. In case you are wondering how long Larry can stay at this facility, the answer is 60 days. Please thank God for Larry's acceptance into this facility. We ask that you continue to pray that Larry comes out of the coma.

Updated Friday July 18, 9:45am EST

The representative from Greenville's long term acute care center came and talked with Allyson yesterday. They also saw Larry. They have not made a decision about whether Larry can go there. There is no word on when Allyson will get an answer.

The doctor saw Larry today. He said it should be another four weeks before they remove the metal pieces from Larry's arm. They did x-ray his hip to check on how well his hip is healing. The doctor did say his lungs are doing well.

Larry did not get into the Regency Center at St. Francis. Allyson is now looking into Greenville Memorial. She is looking at a long term acute care center there and at one in Asheville. Please continue to pray for him to come out of the coma, and for God's mercy for Larry and Allyson.

Updated Monday July 14, 6:30pm EST

Larry's right arm was x-rayed today to check how it is healing. He did sit up today for a little while, but they had him put back in bed. He was in a lot of pain, and they are not sure if it was because of his bone injuries or a possible bed sore.

PLEASE keep praying that Larry would come out of his coma. Pray for Allyson's meeting with a representative from the Regency Center. That is part of St. Francis here in Greenville. The center works with people who can handle about three hours of therapy a day. The meeting is tomorrow (Tuesday). Please continue to go before our faithful Lord on Allyson's behalf. Pray for God to give her strength.

Updated Friday July 11, 6:00pm EST

The facility in Atlanta today determined the Larry was not a candidate for rehabilitation at this time.

Pneumonia is doing better and his body is continuing to heal.

He will be evaluated Monday or Tuesday to determine where he will go for LTAC, Long Term Acute Care. It will be either GHS or Saint Francis.

Allyson needs a great deal of prayer at this time.

Updated Thursday July 10, 2:18pm EST

As of 2:00 p.m. Thursday, there is no new information on Larry's condition. He did sit up in a wheelchair again today. The big thing to pray for is Allyson's meeting tomorrow with the representative from treatment center in Atlanta. The meeting should happen around lunchtime. The woman Allyson is meeting with is named Jenny. Pray for both Allyson and Larry to find favor with her. Pray also that God will open the door for Larry to go there.
On a lighter note, Larry has no more facial hair. Wayne shaved him a couple of days ago. His mom told Wayne this is the first time she has seen his face since he got out of the Navy!

Updated Tuesday July 9, 5:55pm EST

Larry is still waiting to be moved to a room on the pulmonary floor. Once there, they will focus on his lungs and pneumonia. Doctors say that is more important than trauma related injuries. His broken bones continue to heal well. Today the doctor removed the sponge from the incision on his upper leg. The doctor then sowed it up. They also had Larry sit up for about three hours today. The rehab center in Charlotte turned Larry down. On Friday, a lady from Shepherds Gate facility in Atlanta is coming to interview Allyson and look at Larry. Pray for God's favor during that meeting.

Updated Tuesday July 8, 10:05am EST

The surgery yesterday was successful in stopping bleeding in his leg from the incision made during his heart surgery.

Continue to pray for his breathing and that he would wake up. Also for Allyson as she needs wisdom about where to move Larry for treatment and care. Please send your encouragement to Allyson in email form as she reads them every night. The link is listed above.

Larry had to be taken into emergency surgery. That is all we know at this time. An update will be posted as soon as we know something.

Update on Larry as of 6:00pm 7/3/08

Condition: Stable
Details: Allyson is still waiting to talk with the doctor regarding the MRI of Larry’s brain. However, Allyson has learned the condition of his brain has not improved, but it has not worsened either. The storming episodes are still getting weaker, and don’t seem to have caused any new damage to his brain.

He is undergoing occupational therapy. Therapists did get him into a wheelchair today. This is a very difficult task, because of all the equipment he needs. They also have to bring extra oxygen when they take him in the wheelchair, because he uses so much during the process. They did wheel Larry through the halls of the hospital.

He did open his eyes some today, but there is no response in his eyes. The fact that his eyes are opening is a step in the right direction, but it is important to remember Larry is still in what doctors call a deep coma. We need to continue to ask God to wake him up and heal his brain.
A new sponge was placed in the incision doctors made to do the heart surgery back on 5/29. The incision is on his upper leg. The sponge is part of a vacuum pump that drains fluid from the incision. Doctors say this could take another 4 to 6 weeks to heal. It looks like he has a urinary tract infection as well. Pray for that to heal.

His gag reflex is coming back and continues to get stronger. This is a positive thing! Also, the pneumonia in his lungs is improving. The secretion in his lungs is much better!

** As we mentioned yesterday, please pray for his placement following his stay in Mission Hospital. Allyson is still working with the hospital staff regarding the next step for Larry. She is asking us to pray that a coma recovery center will accept Larry. There are facilities in Atlanta, Charlotte and Greenville. Both Allyson and Mission Hospital Staff have been in contact with these facilities. Pray Larry’s case will find favor with the staff of the facility that will best meet his needs and help in his recovery.

Updated Thursday July 3, 5:45pm EST

Larry's condition remains stable. Yesterday the doctors ordered an MRI on his head and Allyson should get a report today. The Physical Therapy folks came in and worked with Larry for the first time. Part of the therapy was to have him sit up on the side of the bed. This must have stimulated something because he had his eyes open most of the day. All the surgeries seem to have healed very well with exception of a small cut on his leg. This incision was made during the heart surgery and became infected. This location must heal from the inside out, so a sponge with a vacuumed pump was placed in the incision to remove drainage continuously. It will take another month or longer for this location to heal.

Allyson has begun with the hospital staff to search for the next location of Larry’s recovery; this could be in Atlanta, Charlotte or Greenville. The pneumonia has improved greatly and it is clear. God has answered prayers on Larry’s lungs. The storming episodes are becoming weaker and there seems to not be any collateral damage. Please continue to remember Allyson in your prayers, as this has been a very difficult time emotionally, physically and spiritually. We love our church family and thank you for all the prayers and visits. Traci and I are remembering all of you in our prayers and look forward to getting to worship with you.

Wayne Batson

Updated Wednesday July 2, 11:45am EST

Allyson says Larry’s lungs are continuing to get better. They will do an MRI of his head at 11 this morning. He is continues to heal from his various surgeries. All of the staples have been taken out. Allyson says the discharge planner has given them information on Carolinas Rehab in Charlotte and Shepherds Center in Atlanta. With this being a holiday week, they probably will not hear anything on these options until early next week. These facilities are hard to get into, so please pray for God to make a way for Larry to get in either place.
*As soon as Allyson learns the results of the MRI, we will make sure to post them on the site.

Updated Wednesday July 2, 9:05am EST

Larry's condition remains stable and steady. All staples will have been removed by today if not last night and everything appears to be healing well. The pneumonia has begun to show clearing & that's an answer to prayers. Larry's storming episodes continue but a little less frequently (keep praying about that!) The surgery on his arm is only 2 wks out, so healing is still taking place in that process. Allyson seems much more comfortable after the past couple of days w/ the new care since the step down (prayer answered w/ that also!) and she is beginning to investigate some options of moving Larry to Greenville ….no timeframe has been discussed at this point. Please pray about that also.

Specific Requests: Pray that the "storming episodes" will subside & Larry will be calm & restful..pray for healing of his brain….pray for Allison as she has many decisions & concerns that will need to be made and / or answered in the near future…Please pray specifically that God will lead Allison to a specific doctor or practice that will help Larry & help give Allison the assurance that she needs in knowing Larry will be getting the best care possible, someone that will take the time to communicate fully with the family concerning the continued care for Larry.

Daniel 9:3 So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.

Please consider taking one day this week to fast and spend time praying before the Lord on behalf of Larry and the family.

Updated Monday June 30, 11:57am EST

As you continue to pray for Larry, Allyson and the family, remember to ask God for healing, wisdom, and patience. Asking in humility and most importantly praying for God's will to be done above all.

At this time there is no change in status on Larry.

Updated Friday June 27, 3:00pm EST

Larry has been moved from the ICU to room A606 and a feeding tube has been installed (this is good).

Allyson requests in addition to prayer for Larry to wake up, that you ask God to give her wisdom concerning decisions that need to be made for Larry's care.

Updated Thursday June 26, 5:10pm EST

Last night several deacons and men of the church spend time anointing Larry and laying hands on him asking God for mercy and healing on his body and that the family would stay strong and to find their strength in our God.

Please continue praying for his lungs to heal and most fervently ask God to heal his brain so he will wake up and respond.

Dont' forget you can send Allyson an email for encouragement.
